Join us for an important evening in the Aquarium Society of Victoria calendar as we hold our 2026 Annual General Meeting—followed by a fascinating presentation from Dr Matthew McGee.

The AGM is an opportunity to reflect on another successful year for ASOV and help determine the direction of the Society for 2027.
The evening’s official business will include:
✅ Presentation of the President’s and Treasurer’s reports
✅ Election of the ASOV Committee for 2027
✅ Recognition of the members and volunteers who supported the Society throughout the year
✅ An opportunity for members to have their say in the future of the club
All ASOV members are encouraged to attend and participate. Your involvement helps keep the Society strong, welcoming and well-positioned for the future.
🎤 GUEST SPEAKER – DR MATTHEW McGEE
A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO RAISING ZOMBIE FISH
What does it take to successfully maintain rare and threatened fish species in aquariums over many generations—and how can everyday aquarium hobbyists contribute?
Dr Matthew McGee is a laboratory head at Monash University, Vice President of ANGFA Victoria, and a member of both the Aquarium Society of Victoria and the Eastern Districts Aquarium Society.
Matt’s research focuses on genetics, with particular emphasis on threatened Australian fishes. Before arriving in Australia, he worked in Switzerland studying African cichlids and also undertook fieldwork in Uganda’s Lake Victoria and its surrounding satellite lakes.
In this fascinating presentation, Matt will explain how principles used in professional conservation breeding programs can also be applied by aquarium hobbyists.
Matt will discuss:
🧬 The importance of maintaining genetic diversity
🐟 How to establish sustainable captive fish populations
🔄 Avoiding the gradual decline of aquarium strains over multiple generations
🌏 The role hobbyists can play in preserving rare and threatened species
🔬 Practical conservation-breeding principles that can be used in the home fishroom
