Directed by Huang Hsin-yao, The Great Buddha+ is a darkly comic Taiwanese satire following Pickle, a lowly night-shift security guard at a factory that casts giant bronze Buddha statues, and his scavenger friend Belly Button, who while killing time discover their wealthy, philandering boss's illicit dash-cam recordings. As the two men live vicariously through the colourful footage of the elite, they stumble onto something far darker that exposes the enormous gap between Taiwan's rich and poor.
Shot mostly in stark black-and-white, with the boss's dash-cam footage bursting into lurid colour, the film's visual conceit became one of the most talked-about formal choices in recent Taiwanese cinema. It swept Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards, the "Chinese Oscars," winning Best New Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Huang Hsin-yao's feature debut, and picked up Best Picture at the Taipei Film Festival, announcing Huang as a major new voice in Asian cinema.
