Artists in Residence -Blackwork Embroidery Workshop

In this workshop, you will work with artist in residence Charlotte Hollis who will show you how to use historic blackwork embroidery to bring modern imagery to life. Everything you need to complete your masterpiece will be provided, and don’t worry if you haven’t wielded a needle in years; all you need to bring is your enthusiasm! After learning some of the history of blackwork, and practising this mindful and soothing embroidery technique, you get to stitching your final image! Charlotte will prove a range of images already transferred onto aida (cross stitch) fabric, including modern emojis and motifs from an early 17th century coif.Even though it may be called ‘blackwork’ embroidery, Charlotte will encourage you to get as creative as possible with your colour choices.

About the artist

Charlotte Hollis is a neurodivergent textile artist, exploring historic embroidery techniques through modern materials, imagery and sensibilities. She has been a lifelong ‘maker’, but only began to accept ‘artist’ or ‘artist-maker’ since the ‘unstitched coif..’ project in 2023. Her contribution to this project has recently been accepted into the ‘Fashion before 1800’ collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, which has encouraged her to follow her artistic ambitions.
Her work is full of heart and humour, and seeks to bring textile history to the forefront whilst soothing herself and others through turbulent modernity.

This workshop is for adults. Ages 16 plus are welcome to attend with a responsible adult.

This workshop is part of a public engagment programme for our artist resident scheme which means the ticket price covers only the materials. If you are able and wish to we have an option to donate to Jelly.

We are a small team working behind the scenes answering your questions. If you email us via eventbrite or via our website we will answer as soon as we can.

Where are you based?

Our studios are located within Broad St Mall. You can find us on the first floor. We are the last unit before the toilets and exit to the carpark. If you get lost please ask any Broad St Mall security guard and they will direct you.

If I cannot make my paid workshop, can I transfer my ticket to another event or get a refund?

We are able to offer a refund (minus transaction fees) or transfer your ticket to a future event if you contact us a minimum of 7 days before the event starts. After this time we cannot offer any refunds or transfers.

Can I arrive early?

To allow ample time for our workshop host to prepare the space and set everything up, we kindly request that you arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before the scheduled start time. This allows us to create a welcoming atmosphere and ensure everything is ready for your arrival.

If you're curious about the space or would like to introduce your children to the workshop environment beforehand, we're more than happy to accommodate your request. Contact us and we can provide you with photos of the space or arrange a visit prior to the workshop. We want to make sure you and your family feel comfortable and excited about the experience!
