ARTIST2ARTIST: Who the Heck Am I? Workshop

We know what it is like when your sense of self crumbles every time someone gives you a piece of ‘constructive feedback’, or every time you are passed over for an opportunity connected to your art. That is a hell of a roller coaster to be stuck on. Are you ready to get off the ride? In this experiential workshop you will discover new things about who you are and what you value. Then you will use those discoveries to get clear on everything from how you make your art, to who you make that art with. One thing is for sure, you will walk away knowing more about the most fascinating of subjects: Yourself.

The workshop experience is unique to each participant, but we feel confident that you will:

• Learn a framework for understanding your multifaceted identity, so that you can put feedback and rejection where it belongs.

• Identify the personal values that inform the priorities and decision making processes in your craft.
• Gain a system for taking back the parts of your artistic career that you feel you have no control over.
• Experiment with detangling your ego from your art so that you can make braver choices.

This is a workshop for the artists who have an existential crisis every time they get a rejection email, the ones who struggle to make decisions they feel confident about, and the ones who get sent on a spiral when someone gives them feedback on their art, good or bad. Artists and creators at any point in their career are welcome, from emerging to seasoned, this workshop will benefit anyone who puts themselves into their work.

Workshops are recommended for people ages 12 and over. Children under 12 years old are welcome with parent/guardian supervision. Please get a ticket for each person (incl. all children).

The workshop is pay what you can! Suggested $20 - $30 to support facilitator fees and supplies.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:

Javelin Laurence is a coach, group facilitator, and storyteller born and raised in Treaty 7 territory, in Calgary. Their work spans several industries but a common thread is their commitment to positive change in creative spaces. Javelin has been working as an actor in the film and theatre industries in Alberta for over 10 years, working on shows like Fargo, Wynonna Earp, and Ride, and with theatre companies including Vertigo, Alberta Theatre Projects, Theatre Calgary, and Jupiter Theatre. They hold a BA in Psychology from the University of Calgary and a Professional Counselling Diploma from Rhodes Wellness College. Through their small business, Alchemy Divergence Coaching, Javelin leverages their lived experience and education as an AuDHD artist and coach to support neurodivergent creatives in building lives and careers that work for them instead of against them. Alchemy partners with nonprofit and arts organizations (like Alcove!) to provide neuro-affirming programming that focuses on resiliency and self-sustainability in creatives.

Alcove Centre for the Arts (alcoveartscentre.ca) is a non-profit organization based in Calgary, AB which aims to make art more accessible and promote a vibrant local arts industry. We curate and cultivate community art spaces for Calgarians to engage in art and creativity while building a platform for emerging local artists.

Alcove is a Recreational Art Space open to the public providing free art supplies and instruments to stimulate creativity. The space also acts as a gathering place for workshops, community events, and social meetups. Come visit and get creative!
