About this Event

Katie Mulligan is a freelance illustrator who grew up ten miles from Cicero Swamp. Through her work, she focuses largely on the natural world, often incorporating nature either through research or as an allegorical device. Her current body of personal illustrative work focuses on wetlands and ecosystems that are historically distorted or underrepresented. A focal point of this work has been a case study centered on Cicero Swamp Wildlife Management Area and Oneida Lake, both vast ecosystems in New York. Her professional practice often engages with social and political issues, the natural world, and other topics through client-commissioned work. Previous clients have included the Georgia Museum of Art, The Mushroom Magazine, the Huffington Post, Wyrmwood Gaming, and more.

As a child, Katie knew Cicero Swamp only from the perspective of the planes that flew overhead and dumped chemicals on it to target mosquitoes. Now, as an adult through her practice as an illustrator, Katie has come to know the swamp as an incredibly biodiverse, rare, and complex ecosystem. Through her work on Cicero Swamp, she positions this artistic investigation as an archive of an ecosystem that will collapse over the coming generations. Cicero Swamp is fed by Oneida Lake, which is projected to undergo significant change and potential collapse by 2099 due to climate change.

Light refreshments will be provided.
