RJ was a wildlife biologist with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department for three decades. He surveyed small mammals, deer, elk, pronghorn, and moose using a four-wheel drive pickup, snowmobile, small plane or helicopter. He traversed hundreds of miles of caves and abandoned mines counting bats and was the Field Project Leader for reintroducing the endangered black-footed ferret in south-central Wyoming.
He traveled the Wyoming backcountry extensively, often accompanied by his Labrador retriever, while big game hunting and backpacking in the mountains. He had the good fortune to spend a lot of time in the places he writes about in his outdoor mysteries: Disappearance Creek, Outlaw Creek, and Ghost in the Rocks including the Wind River Mountains, Hole-in-the-Wall Valley, Brown's Park, and the Copper Mountains in Wyoming; and Peloncillo Chiricahua, and Huachuca Mountains in Arizona and New Mexico. He has also traveled widely in Central America, Mexico, South America, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the western U.S.
He authored several technical wildlife publications on bats, black-footed ferrets, and birds; and has written wildlife-related articles for outdoor magazines. Arizona publisher, Treble Heart Books, published his first outdoor mystery book, Disappearance Creek, in 2009. In 2012, MyPublisher published his photo essay book, River of Life, Four Seasons along Arizona's Rio San Pedro, and Amazon Publishing published his second outdoor mystery, Outlaw Creek.
Along with two friends, he backpacked the 817-mile Arizona National Scenic Trail from Mexico to Utah in 2010 and contributed several photographs to the Arizona Trail Guide.
Since retiring he has lived near the San Pedro River a few miles from Sierra Vista, Arizona. He spends his time writing, traveling, and photographing the wildlife and landscapes of Arizona and the western U.S.
