Maris Zammit began her artistic practice after closing a significant chapter of her life devoted to motor racing, discovering in watercolour a medium that proved both restorative and creatively expansive.
Through painting, she developed a renewed attentiveness to the Maltese Islands, drawing inspiration from their architecture, historic towns, rural landscapes, and coastal environments. Her formal training began under the late Harry Alden, with a primary focus on watercolour alongside experimentation in oils. She later undertook a seven-year study of the human figure with Anton Calleja, working across media including pastels, acrylics, charcoal, and watercolour.
Zammit has presented solo exhibitions and participated widely in group exhibitions in Malta and Gozo, including at Palazzo Spinola during Notte Bianca in Valletta. A long-standing member of the Malta Society of Arts, she has received two awards from the Society for watercolour and oil painting, and has exhibited internationally in the United Kingdom and Italy.
Her work is characterised by a high level of detail and a fluid movement between subject matter, ranging from landscapes and seascapes to portraits and boats. She is a three-time Merit Award recipient at the International Watercolour Masters in the United Kingdom and has received Certificates of Artistic Achievement at the Luxembourg Art Prize from 2022 to 2025.
Vanishing Vistas reflects her ongoing commitment to documenting Malta’s fragile urban and natural heritage, capturing scenes increasingly threatened by time and contemporary development.
