Enjoy this special art & fashion private curator-led guided tour of the Leiber Collection - a museum located on the grounds of Gerson and Judith Leiber's former property where they also built a home, art studio and sculpture garden all hidden behind a beautifully designed iron gate. The museum lovingly showcases Judith Leiber's original handbag designs from her long and illustrious career and Gerson's paintings, sculptures and printmaking.
Its current landmark exhibition honors the 20th anniversary of the Leiber Collection. I actually met Gerson and Judith Leiber (or Judy and Gus as their friends called them) when they first opened their museum with the goal of ensuring their legacy as a creative power couple. Since then, I have also had the pleasure of co-curating several exhibitions featuring the purses by Judith and paintings by Gerson at the Nassau County Museum of Art and as curator of a special art and fashions exhibition at the.Art League of Long Island.
The tour includes the fascinating story of how Judith grew up in a Jewish family in Budapest during WWII under rough circumstances. She interned at the Budapest Handbag Guild by chance and quickly learned the trade. The way she rose to the heights of international fame in the fashion industry is a lesson in strength, determination and talent. At the end of the war, she met American GI Gerson Leiber and that is where their love story began. They married and moved to NYC where she established herself as a master craftsperson of handbag design. Her expert skills of working with leather, exotic skins, metals, gems and more enabled her to perfectly execute her innovative designs. Gerson, a talented painter, printmaker and sculptor himself, decided to join Judith in the business and together, they created an empire!
