About this Event
ARTFUL BUZZ: IN-PERSON GUIDED TOUR OF THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK ON MUSEUM MILE
WEDNESDAY, JULY 8 @ 11AM-1PM
COST: $100 pp (includes admission)
During our private guided Artful Buzz tour, we will see the permanent collections and 4 must-see exhibitions! Each exhibit offers unique perspective on all things NYC...
#1: On a historical note, the museum is proudly marking the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence with a major 7,000 square foot journey through Revolutionary War era. The Occupied City: New York and the American Revolution offers an immersive experience by bringing this timeline to life through a multitude of installations, including a recreated 18th century tavern and a Loyalist print shop to multimedia experiences of battles, fires, and more with stories every step of the way.
#2: Next is an artful adventure to see a special mural project entitled Another Wonderland: Abram Champanier;s Alice Mural. The exhibition celebrates the rescue of restoration of this major New Deal WPA project that was originally created for the children's ward at Gouverneur Hospital in 1938-40. For the first time in nearly 50 years, the 16 panel series and accompanying archival materials is brought back to its original glory. The images are spectacular! The artist reimagined the characters from Lewis Carroll's storybook and brings them to all different parts of 1930s NYC from the subway to Coney Island to the Brooklyn Bridge and beyond. It is a wonderful combination of fantasy, color and wit - all dedicated to healing.
#3: The Stettheimer Dollhouse is a treasure, not only because of its beautifully designed miniatures and charming features that was the brainchild of Carrie Stettheimer, one of the "Stettie" sisters whose family lived among the city's elite society and top creative circles. There are so many incomparable touches that took her over twenty years to perfect - a 1920s doll resembling art patron Gertrude Stein, elaborate miniature decor from Limoges vases to Louis XV furniture. My all-time favorite part of the dollhouse is the miniature art gallery. Art world greats participated in the making of this special little art room and hand-painted original mini-paintings such as Marcel Duchamp and his 1918 three and a half inch version of Nude Descendng a Staircase. What a treat to try to identify teeny tiney works by the likes of Gaston Lachaise, George Bellows, Margeurite and William Zorach and others.
#4: Now take the concept of the Stettheimer Dollhouse and watch it explode into a much more recent miniature rendition of NYC. in He Built This City, we explore the monumental hand-crafted model created by Joe Macken, a Queens-born truck driver who dedicated 21 years to erecting this 3D balsa wood recreation of NY from skyscrapers and iconic buildings to all types of boats in the harbor. The end result is a 30 x 50 feet diorama that began as a hobbyist project and ended up a masterpiece. Everyone is talking about this, so you HAVE to see it for yourself!
