About this Event
Unveil the stories and struggles that lie behind the canvas...
“It's easy to be a brilliant artist when you don't have care responsibilities – or if you have someone at home who takes care of everything.” Being a mother and staying dedicated to your art can be difficult. But it is possible.
Experience an inspiring evening with visual artist and poet Mimi Kunz. How does motherhood impact an artist's work? In her latest book, Mother Tongue, Mimi explores the language of the body through the story of her daughter’s birth and first year of life.
This event features an intimate conversation where Mimi discusses the challenges and triumphs of balancing motherhood with a dedication to art. Engage in thought-provoking discussions on identity, presence, and the role of women in the art world. Discover the resilience and creativity that mothers bring to their artistry.
Mimi Kunz is a visual artist and poet. A Buddhist monk once told her to ‘put the mind in the body’ — advice which has shaped her life and art. Curious about the body as a language, she observes its universal expressions and personal characteristics, pointing out the unconscious gestures through which we read each other’s bodies.
Mimi studied Painting and Graphics at the Staatliche Akademie Karlsruhe, Germany. Her work has been shaped by residencies in Vietnam, and exhibited in Brussels (Maison d’Art Actuel des Chartreux, ODRADEK) and internationally (Casa del Arte, Concepción, Chile, Nature Art Biennale, South Korea). It can be found in private collections across all continents and has been supported by the Goethe Institut Hanoi and Culture Moves Europe.
Living in Brussels with her young family, Mimi lets her life and work merge and inspire each other. This might mean that a child will crawl on stage while she’s reading her poetry.
The evening will be hosted at The Nine - Belgium's first female-focused members’ club, which is home to the works of female artists from around the world, through temporary exhibitions, as well as their permanent collection.
