Join us in November to hear acclaimed art history lecturer, Stella Grace Lyons’s fascinating talk on John William Waterhouse.
Waterhouse’s paintings are almost all of women, many of whom are nude or scantily dressed. He was fascinated by the femme fatale, and often painted women luring men to their doom.
Influenced by both Victorian Classicism and the Pre-Raphaelites, Waterhouse’s paintings still create scandal today.
His masterpiece, ‘Hylas And the Nymphs’ was removed from the Manchester Art Gallery in 2018 to ‘prompt conversations about how we display and interpret artworks’.
Are some of his paintings pornographic? Do they really warrant the removal from the gallery wall? Or does their classical setting give them respectability?
This talk will look at Waterhouse’s most celebrated works, including ‘Hylas and the Nymphs’ and ‘The Lady of Shallot’, and explores the paintings within the context of the time.
‘Without sacrificing scholarship, Stella Grace Lyons has a most engaging way of hooking an audience into sharing her passionate interest in art history, drawing three dimensional human stories and experiences from the two-dimensional canvas'
- Maev Kennedy, Guardian Arts Correspondent
Following the talk, please stay for tea and cake, served in the Pavilion’s beautiful Gallery.

Ymunwch â ni ym mis Tachwedd i glywed sgwrs hynod ddiddorol gan yr hanesydd celf nodedig, Stella Grace Lyons, am John William Waterhouse.
O fenywod y mae bron pob un o baentiadau Waterhouse, lawer ohonynt yn noeth neu heb fawr ddillad amdanyn nhw. Roedd y femme fatale yn ei gyfareddu, ac roedd yn paentio menywod yn hudo dynion i’w tranc.
Wedi'u dylanwadu gan Glasuriaeth Fictoraidd a'r Cyn-Raphaelyddion, mae paentiadau Waterhouse yn dal i greu sgandal heddiw.
Tynnwyd ei gampwaith, 'Hylas And the Nymphs' o Oriel Gelf Manceinion yn 2018 er mwyn ‘ysgogi sgyrsiau a, y ffordd rydyn ni’n arddangos a dehongli gweithiau celf'.
Ai pornograffi yw rhai o'i baentiadau? Ydyn nhw wir yn haeddu cael eu tynnu o orielau? Neu ydy eu cyd-destun clasurol yn golygu y dylid eu parchu?
Bydd y sgwrs hon yn edrych ar weithiau enwocaf Waterhouse, gan gynnwys 'Hylas and the Nymphs' a 'The Lady of Shallot', ac yn archwilio'r paentiadau yng nghyd-destun y cyfnod.
‘Heb aberthu ysgolheictod, mae Stella Grace Lyons yn defnyddio dull hynod ddifyr o ennyn diddordeb cynulleidfa i rannu ei brwdfrydedd dros hanes celf, gan dynnu straeon a phrofiadau dynol tri dimensiwn o’r cynfas dau ddimensiwn’
- Maev Kennedy, Gohebydd Celfyddydau The Guardian
Ar ôl y sgwrs, mae croeso mawr i chi aros i gael te a theisen gartref flasus, wedi'u gweini yn Oriel hardd y Pafiliwn.
