Celebrating landscape artists Constable, Palmer and Turner, come along this October to learn more about these inspiring artists.

John Constable transformed the way we see the English landscape. While most landscape painters of his day travelled extensively to find ‘picturesque’ or ‘sublime’ scenery, Constable never left England. He instead embarked on a journey to create unique, deeply personal images of the countryside round his boyhood home of East Bergholt.

For many, Constable conjures up images of chocolate boxes and biscuit tins. This talk will demolish this association and give Constable the respect he deserves – as a true revolutionary!

A society called “The Ancients”, strange shadows under the moonlight, romantic visionaries in a small Kent village…. No, not another adaptation of Agatha Christie but the story of artist and writer Samuel Palmer. Palmer, a follower of William Blake, created paintings and woodcuts that instil magic into the English countryside. He painted the landscape of Shoreham in Kent with a mystical vision and bridged the gap between Blake and JMW Turner. Enjoy the fairy grotto that is the world of this unique English landscape artist.

It is difficult now to imagine that Turner’s landscapes were savaged by critics at the 1836 summer exhibition at the Royal Academy. Turner’s intense chromatic freedom and atmospheric uncertainties were difficult to digest. If his paintings drew strong reactions, it was because they were groundbreaking, emotional, experimental and had a powerful impact on artists for years to come, influencing the Impressionists among others. Today many consider him to be Britain’s best painter.

The day starts with the first Art History talk at 10am in the Pavilion cinema. This will be followed by tea, coffee, and delicious homemade cookies in the Gallery.

The second Art History talk begins at 12.15pm, followed at 1.15pm by a light lunch and time to mingle with fellow guests back in the Gallery.

The final Art History talk of the day begins at 2.15pm, after which guests are once again invited into the Gallery for tea with scone, cream & jam before bidding farewell!

Yn hytrach, cychwynnodd ar daith i greu delweddau unigryw, hynod bersonol o gefn gwlad o gwmpas cartref ei fachgendod, East Bergholt. I lawer, mae Constable yn creu delweddau delfrydol. Bydd y sgwrs hon yn dymchwel y cysylltiad hwn ac yn rhoi i Constable y parch y mae'n ei haeddu – fel chwyldröwr go iawn!

Na, nid addasiad arall o Agatha Christie ond stori'r artist a'r awdur, Samuel Palmer. Creodd Palmer, un o ddilynwyr William Blake, baentiadau a thorluniau pren sy'n rhoi hud i gefn gwlad Lloegr. Paentiodd dirwedd Shoreham yng Nghaint gyda gweledigaeth gyfriniol a phontiodd y bwlch rhwng Blake a JMW Turner. Mwynhewch y groto tylwyth teg sy'n fyd yr artist tirluniau unigryw hwn o Loegr.

Mae'n anodd dychmygu nawr y cafodd tirluniau Turner eu beirniadu’n llym gan feirniaid yn arddangosfa haf 1836 yn yr Academi Frenhinol. Roedd rhyddid cromatig dwys ac ansicrwydd atmosfferig Turner yn anodd eu hamgyffred. Os oedd ei baentiadau'n denu ymatebion cryf, roedd hynny oherwydd eu bod yn arloesol, yn emosiynol, yn arbrofol ac yn cael effaith bwerus ar artistiaid am flynyddoedd i ddod, gan ddylanwadu ar yr Argraffiadwyr, ymhlith eraill. Erbyn heddiw mae llawer yn ei ystyried yn arlunydd gorau Prydain.

Mae'r diwrnod yn dechrau gyda'r sgwrs Hanes Celf gyntaf am 10am yn sinema'r Pafiliwn. I ddilyn, bydd te, coffi, a chwcis cartref blasus yn yr Oriel.

Mae'r ail sgwrs Hanes Celf yn dechrau am 12.15pm, gyda chinio ysgafn am 1.15pm ac amser i gymysgu gyda chyd-westeion yn ôl yn yr Oriel. Mae sgwrs Hanes Celf olaf y dydd yn dechrau am 2.15pm, ac ar ôl hynny gwahoddir gwesteion i'r Oriel unwaith eto am de gyda sgonsen, hufen a jam cyn ffarwelio!
