From the Press Release:On March 1 at the Benicia Public Library, former Benicia Poet Laureates will be reading their poetry and talking about their experiences in that position from 2 to 4 p.m. Speaking will be Ronna Leon, Lois Requist, Johanna Ely, Tom Stanton, Mary Susan Gast, and Kathy Monroe. While each will have had a unique experience, a love of poetry and sharing poetry is common to all of them.
"My time as poet laureate was pure joy,” Johanna Ely said. Others echoed that feeling.
Not every town has a poet laureate, but a community like Benicia that thrives on the arts has one, of course. Joel Fallon gets the credit for starting the program early in this century. Joel started a First Tuesday Poetry meeting at the Library back then. He also successfully lobbied the City Council to get the position in place.
The position will be open for applications March 1 and will close on March 31. Application forms will be available at the March 1st event and on the Library website. The Poet Laureate’s term will be from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2028. The applicant either has to live/work in Benicia, or be a non-resident that has participated in Benicia based library events.
The public is invited. Poetry lovers, particularly those who would like to know more about the Poet Laureate position, are welcome. There will be an opportunity to ask questions of those who’ve held the position.
In the Doña Benicia Room.
