Architectural Tour of Congregational House with the CLA

Designed by the Boston-based architectural firm of Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge (now Shepley Bulfinch), the eight-story Georgian-Federal style building opened in 1898 to house the various national agencies of the Congregational faith. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building is owned by Faros Properties, a private landlord, and home to multiple non- and for-profit organizations.

The tour will begin in the lobby of 14 Beacon Street and explore the famous bas reliefs on the outside of the building and the various plaques in the lobby before going up to the historic Reading Room to look at original materials documenting the long history of the building. These monthly collection tours connect residents of Beacon Hill and the greater Boston region with original, rarely seen materials in the CLA’s collections.

This event will run from 12 to 1 pm and will begin with a short talk by Kyle Roberts, followed by plenty of time for browsing items from our collections and asking questions.

Thanks to the generosity of the Beacon Hill Civic Association, these programs are offered completely free of charge to the public. Reservations are appreciated but not required.
