Arab Street Heritage Walk

We trace the history of Arab Street. Meet me, 9am, at Bugis MRT, 1st November 2025. You can recognize me with my Tourist Guide badge. From there it is a very short walk to Arab Street where we begin.

This walk traces the good, the bad and also the ugly side of our history. Arab Street might not have been, if not for the squabble between Sir Stamford Raffles and Major General William Farquhar.

Disappointed at William Farquhar, Stamford Raffles had Mr. Johnson come up with the Raffles Town Plan. This town plan included the Arabian Community (which came under the Kampong Glam district - specifically laid down for the Malay Community).

This isn’t exactly a bad thing, for later, Arab Street actually evolved into a colorful street with many accolades to its name. From Persian carpets to Aladdin Lamps, the array of Persian goods is actually quite a collection. The Arabian atmosphere here can be felt during the evening especially on the weekends.

From Ali Baba & The Forty Thieves to The Tales of a 1001 Nights, we’ll explore the exotic flavor of Arab Street’s connection to Singapore. Meet me, 9am, Bugis MRT (EXIT B), 1st November 2025. This tour ends at Beach Road, where the beach used to be.
