You'll leave class with a great understanding of the basics of sugar cookie decorating plus a few cool icing techniques we'll cover! More details on refunds, things to bring, credits, and FAQs are below - looking forward to having you with us!

If you've never had the opportunity to check out The Olde Stone Porch venue - it has to be seen to be believed. This is an absolutely beautiful setting and the proprietors Sharon Conley and her family have put an enormous amount of thought, love, and work into the restoration of the house and barn. Not to mention the unique Gazebo that has its own fantastic, local origin story. Sharon will be on hand to tell everyone about the history and the work that they have put into this unique property.

About this Class

This class is for the beginner cookie decorator, for the person who is just curious about what royal icing cookie decorating is all about, no experience necessary! If you have limited experience with decorating sugar cookies, found yourself frustrated with royal icing, or if you are trying to have fun with family or friends, this is the class for you! We will be doing a fun Spring theme set of cookies that taste amazing and will look even better once you’ve completed your decorating!

We provide everything you will need from cookies, icing, sprinkles, and a box to take your awesome creations home in - we just need YOU! Each student gets 6 cookies, 4 icing colors, sprinkles, and royal icing transfers when applicable to the cookie set (you’ll learn about these in class). We’ll provide all the tools necessary for you to knock this cookie class out of the park! Everything is prepped right before class – so no baking or icing mixing is required. Just decorate!

This class is on May 22th and starts at 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM sharp so we can have enough time to decorate and answer questions along the way. Come by yourself, bring your best friend, or bring the family - we have seating for up to 12 people! It's a blast whether you're coming with a friend, family member, or solo!

This class is good for ages 12+ (kids under 12 are welcome when accompanied by an adult, but if you'd like to leave the kiddos at home, purchase an add-on class kit (more on that below)! The take-home kits are great for doing at home with the kids – or just as a second try to expand your learning, plus –when you purchase a kit, I will provide a printed pictorial guide so you can follow along with the class steps yourself!

The class will be held in this beautiful barn at The Olde Stone Porch 3363 N State Rd, Ionia, MI 48846.

Things to Bring

Wondering what you need to bring to have a successful time decorating? Well – nothing’s required – but here’s the things we recommend if you’d like to elevate your experience!

• Bring an apron! Things can get messy when you’re workin’ with royal icing grab an apron (bonus points if it’s cute – I’ll definitely be asking where you got it).

• Bring your glasses! There’s a lot to see, and many small details as well as example photos of your cookies! You don’t want to miss out on anything.

• Bring your phone! I love it when students take pictures throughout class – so bring a phone!

• Bring a mask if you’d like! These classes follow the state health guidelines, but if you’d like to wear a mask throughout class – please do!

• Bring a good attitude! Cookies are fun, but they're also challenging! A good attitude makes all the difference.

About your Teacher Kelly from Loafing Goat Bakery

Who doesn’t love getting out and doing something fun while also eating delicious cookies!? Community, family, food, fun (and goats) that’s why we started Loafing Goat Bakery - that is what we are all about! That’s why we take the Loafing Goat Bakery booth to events, and that’s why I started teaching cookie decorating classes! Cookie Classes by Kelly, owner of Loafing Goat Bakery are a fun and relaxing learning experience.

The classes I teach are rooted in the basics and cater to beginning cookie decorators or people just looking to have fun while learning a new skill. Whether you want a fun date, a girls-or-guys-night-out or want to explore cookie decorating on your own - there is a seat in class for you!

A little about me – I’ve been baking since I could stand on a chair in my Grandma’s kitchen, watching her and helping make the annual Springerle cookies. I come from a long line of bakers. I’ve been working in kitchens and practicing the art of sugar work and baking for as long as I can remember. I’ve had a piping bag in my hand for +20 years. I’ve studied with pastry chefs in restaurant kitchens, taken a variety of formal cake and cookie decorating classes including making and designing sugar paste flowers and floral arrangements. I’ve practiced and studied all things baking and I love what I do –who wouldn’t love it?! It’s the sweetest job in the world!

A sk me about the Old Red Mill Farmers Market! You may also recognize me from the ORMFM where we take our Loafing Goat Bakery booth most Saturdays throughout the Market season. I help coordinate the farmers market and I'm the go-to person for Michigan Cottage Food Law questions. Consider me your resource as well, if you have questions about the farmers market or cottage food law - get in touch!

Oh yeah – I'm going to have classes throughout the year which highlight different themes so make sure to sign up to receive updates in our monthly newsletter - so you can get in on the cookie action!

Can I purchase an additional take-home kit?

Yes! Many parents or practicing cookie decorators purchase additional class kits to take home and re-do the classes. You can purchase an add-on kit during check-out. Your kit will be available at the end of your class - so don't forget it!

Do I need to know how to bake?

Nope! No baking history is required. I will have the cookies pre-made for you along with the icing already mixed and colored. Have a little decorating experience under your belt… er… apron? Join us! I can help with questions on icing mixing, icing techniques and dough spread!

What will we learn in class?

You’ll learn what goes into preparing royal icing, the value of different icing consistencies – we’ll touch on tips and tricks to make your cookies look even better than they taste (and they taste good)! You’ll also learn different decorating techniques depending on the class theme such as marbling, outlining, wet-on-wet, brush embroidery, and painting. Or hey – go off script and make your own designs – it’s your class!

What do I need to bring?

Nothing but a smile! Everything will be provided for you including my (rather tasty) sugar cookies. All you need to do is join us and have fun! Messy decorator? You can bring your own apron or just wear easy-to-wash clothing. Oh – and bring your phone – I love photos!

What age is best for cookie classes?

Our classes are for almost any age! From youngsters to grandparents - come on in and have some cookie fun with us! Our in-person classes are great for any age; however, kiddos under 12 will need a parent to take the class as well. If you think your child may be too young to enjoy the in-person class, purchase an additional take-home kit! I will even provide a pictorial guide so you can follow the steps from class and teach your kids in the comfort of your home.

Can just my child take the class?

We ask that all parents also attend the classes with their children under 12. For children 12 and over, you can drop off your child to take the class and return to pick-up in 2 hours. Due to space restrictions, we do not have room for parents to stand by and watch their children in class. So unfortunately, your adorable kiddo under 12 cannot take the class alone. A parent must also purchase a ticket and take the class as well - but I promise you this - it's super fun for all involved!

What will I bring home?

By the end of the class, you will have created a set of 6 beautiful cookies ready to dry for 24 - 48 hours in their own box. You'll take them home to enjoy!

I’ll send you a list of the tools we used in class so that you can recreate these cookies at home. And of course, you’ll have new skills, memories, and fun!

Can I sign up as an individual or as a group?

You can sign up either as an individual, with a friend, or with a whole group. The more the merrier! We are limited to a total of 12 seats per class, so definitely sign up ASAP!

Where is this class located?

This class will be held at The Olde Stone Porch 3363 N State Rd, Ionia, MI 48846.

I signed up for a class but can't make it?

:( We understand that life happens so that’s why we allow you to cancel up to 8 days before the class. You can always transfer your spot to a friend though (and what a nice friend you are). Any cancelation after 7 days prior to the class, will result in a class credit redeemable for up to 1 year from the credit issue date. Please read below for our COVID-19 Cancelation Policies.

Cancelation / Refund / Sick Policy

Note - our classes do not require masks for vaccinated individuals. Our classes follow the current recommendation by the Michigan State government and health organizations.

Class Masking Policy:

• You will not be required to wear a mask throughout the class; however, you can choose to wear a mask if you'd like! I provide hand sanitizer, disinfectant, and wipes for attendees. Each station is disinfected along with the venue before and after your event.

Showing Symptoms Before 7 Days Out:

• If you’re sick prior to the 7-day refund cut-off, you can cancel for a full refund! And might we say thank you for quarantine-ing (is that a word??). To request a refund through Eventbrite, follow these steps.

Showing Symptoms After 7 Days Out:

• For any sickness symptoms prior to your class’s start time but after the 7-day refund policy, please email us before your class’s start time, and we’ll give you a credit for the next class!

You Don't Show Up or Email Prior To Class:

• If I do not hear from you before your class’s start time, and you do not show up for class, I won’t be able to offer you a refund or a credit even if you're sick. So please reach out before class if you’re feeling sick!

Add a Sugar Cookie Class Kit to your Order!

• Order an additional sugar cookie class kit and take the class home with you! This is fun if you want to teach a child, a friend, practice more (or just eat them)! The class kits are an exact replica of the cookies, icing and sprinkles you used in class. They come with everything you'll need to recreate your set from class and I will even provide a pictorial guide so you can follow my step-by-step instructions from home! Sugar Cookie Kits are created before your class and you'll pick them up and take them with you after class.

• How long can a kit last? Depending on how you store your kit, they can last for a week or longer. Freezing cookies will keep them fresh for a long time, but we recommend using your kit as soon as possible - ideally in the first week after you've taken it home. Cookies are heat-sealed for freshness – but again, use it in under a week to make sure it tastes the best. Freezing royal icing will also keep it fresh for a long time, however, do use it as soon as possible. And note that royal icing is almost pure sugar and typically does not freeze hard, so don’t be alarmed if you take your bag out of the freezer and it’s still soft.

Allergen Disclaimer / Class Cancelation Policy / Weather Policy / Fees Disclaimer

Allergens: Heads up – these cookies include the following ingredients: Wheat(Gluten), Milk, Eggs

Please note – these cookies are prepared in a kitchen that also bakes with common, known allergens such as eggs, gluten, and nuts. Such allergens may be present in the kitchen used to bake these cookies and make the icing. Please consider your allergies before registering.

Class Cancelation Policy: Classes may be canceled at the discretion of me, the event host. This rarely happens – but in that extremely rare event that it does, you’ll receive a 100% refund including your Event Bright fees.

Classes with attendance below 6 will be canceled. Don’t be sad! You can either get a class credit for the next class you'd like to attend (along with my apologies) or a full refund! I’ll let you know if your class has low attendance and is in danger of getting canceled 5 days before the class, so that you can bring try to bring a friend (hint hint) or find other plans for that day.

Weather Policy: Sometimes Jack Frost doesn’t play well with cookie class schedules, and Mother Nature seems to be takig notes. In the event of inclement weather, I’ll contact you with options – these may differ depending on the weather event, but rest assured – we’ll figure something out!

Event Bright Fees: Your ticket price includes your ticket fees; however, Event Bright does not refund its fees. If you cancel your ticket and request a refund prior to the cancelation window expiring, I’ll happily give you a refund less the Event Bright fee – since I don’t get this fee back either. Event Bright keeps it regardless of whether you show up or cancel. I know – I hate it too!
