This year’s Hamish Henderson Memorial Lecture explores cultural activism and is presented by Stan Reeves.Born and raised in Stonehouse, Stan Reeves documented public services in London in the 1970s and subsequently became involved in community arts and political action. He worked in a sawmill in Lanark and community development projects in Motherwell before studying Community Development at Moray House Edinburgh.
From 1979 Stan worked at the Adult Learning Project (ALP) in a working class district of Edinburgh, where he remained for 32 years working with the local community on topics that interested them - history, culture, women’s studies, land studies, contemporary politics, literacy and numeracy, writers’ workshops and traditional music. With local folk he founded and sustained an Unemployed Workers Centre, Oral History Project, Photoworkshop and the Scots (Traditional) Music Group. Through promoting social, cultural and political action a dialogical learning community was built. Stan retired in April 2011 but is still making music and dance in the community with the Aye Notes street band and ceilidh dance bands.
