The Annual Aarhus Film Festival returns in May with a bold and diverse programme of 13 short and feature-length films. The AAFF will take place once again at our favourite cinema hall, Øst for Paradis, on May 9&10, welcoming the city's vibrant crowd.Combining films that touch upon various themes through fiction and life-based stories, the independent film festival showcases the power of independent cinema. Sharing the voices of upcoming and established filmmakers from Denmark and beyond, the annual Festival aims to serve as an inspirational cinematic event.
Divided into four strands, the AAFF2026 boasts two short film programmes and two feature films. Yrsa Roca Fannberg's feature-length documentary 'The Ground Beneath Our Feet' films life in Grund, a home for the elderly in Reykjavík, Iceland, capturing the essence of life when the end is near. On the second day, the programme opens with the human and deeply moving 'Highly Explosive' by Kerstin Polte. A tragicomic episodic film that weaves together stories of resilience and connection in a city on the brink.
The short film programmes bring together different aesthetics, styles and stories. The animated film Panorama (dir. Nicolaj Larsson), the multi-awarded 'Kotowari' (dir. Coralie Watanabe Prosper), the documentary Andreas Grützner's 'Actually, I Didn’t Want to Stay Long' are some of this year's shorts.
Through stories by emerging filmmakers worldwide, the AAFF highlights the importance of independent filmmaking, supports cinematographers, and shares thought-provoking messages and stories.
