Anna Fermin's Trigger Gospel at White Lilac

For nearly 30 years, Anna Fermin’s Trigger Gospel has been one of the defining bands of Chicago’s Americana and alt-country scene—building a devoted following through beautifully written songs, road-tested musicianship and the unmistakable voice of Kenosha’s own Anna Fermin.

Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune and Sound Opinions called Fermin “one of Chicago’s most treasured voices,” while the Chicago Reader praised the band’s “perfect balance of grace and gusto.” The Austin Chronicle once counted Trigger Gospel among the most exciting acts in Chicago’s thriving alt-country movement.

Formed in 1997 by Fermin with guitarist Andon Davis, bassist Michael Krayniak and drummer Paul Bivans, the band began its remarkable run with the kind of opening engagement most musicians can only dream about: sharing a stage with Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. Since then, they have toured throughout the United States and Europe and performed alongside Steve Earle, David Crosby, Neko Case, Joe Ely, Robbie Fulks and Delbert McClinton.

Their recorded history is equally impressive. Legendary Texas musician and producer Lloyd Maines produced their 1999 album Things to Come, an album praised for Fermin’s soulful voice and songwriting. Their music also appeared on influential Bloodshot Records collections alongside artists including Neko Case, Old 97’s, Alejandro Escovedo and The Handsome Family.

Across six critically acclaimed releases, Trigger Gospel has created its own deeply human strain of Americana—country at the roots, rock-and-roll around the edges, and filled with melodic hooks, poetic storytelling and songs that sound genuinely lived in.

And yes, almost three decades on the road have produced a few less prestigious milestones: a goat carcass transported in a cooler and a drummer accidentally abandoned at a New Jersey rest stop. Fortunately, the drummer made it back. The goat’s outcome is less encouraging.

Now Anna returns home to Kenosha with the original core of Paul Bivans, Michael Krayniak and Andon Davis for an intimate performance at White Lilac. This is a rare opportunity to experience a band that helped shape Chicago Americana—not in a noisy festival field or crowded club, but inside a room built for listening.
