About this Event

Welcome to the Anglo-Somali Society AGM! Join us for our annual gathering at the YMCA Indian Student Hostel. This is your chance to connect with fellow members, discuss important matters, and hear from Dr Halima Mohamed. Don't miss out on this opportunity to have your voice heard and make a difference in our community. A meal can be purchased in the canteen without booking in advance.

Dr Halima Mohamed is an academic and a seasoned professional with over 20 years of practical experience in health, humanitarian, and development interventions. Her expertise and skills in health, humanitarian, and development fields in various parts of the world are concentrated on health systems and policy, control, and management of communicable diseases with global public health concerns or international pandemics, epidemics, and endemic potentials [i.e., SARS_Cov-02, Influenza, Ebola, TB and HIV infections and Co-infections].

Dr Mohamed is a mixed-method academic researcher with a PhD in public health and health policy from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, an MSc in health services research and population health from the University of Calgary (Calgary-Alberta, Canada) and a BA in international development studies and health promotion and health education from the renowned Dalhousie University (Halifax-Nova Scotia, Canada).

With more than 20 years of first-hand operational work, teaching and research experience in public health and policy, health systems development and health emergencies in diverse countries, Dr Mohamed's qualifications are extensive and deeply rooted in practical experience. Her research expertise and experience in public health and policy in the UK, Canada, and low-and middle-income countries is concerned with health protection, health improvement, and health systems and policy. This practical experience has allowed her to apply her theoretical knowledge in real-world situations.

Dr Mohamed has developed a deep interest in health inequalities, particularly focusing on disability in children born to immigrant families and underserved populations in London. Her commitment to addressing these issues is unwavering, and she is dedicated to making a difference in these communities. Dr Mohamed's leadership is evident in her current role as the principal investigator of a collaborative research project exploring the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder in Children from Black, Asian, and Ethnic minorities, with a particular emphasis on Somali Children in the UK and with potential expansion to the rest of the world. Dr Mohamed has been a member of the World Health Organization's Outbreak Response and Pandemic Management Expert Team since 2017.
