A significant shift has been taking place in Ukrainian revivalist dance in the past several decades, with a movement for more ethnographically grounded participatory dancing rising in contrast to the more established staged folk dance movement that thrived in Soviet Ukrainian times. This participatory/reconstructionist movement dance echoes similar movements in most other central European countries, but is taking place somewhat later, and with its own particular characteristics. The goal of this presentation is to describe this movement with a focus on two somewhat competing priorities: On the one hand, the expressed goal of many participants is to return to an ethnographic authenticity and reconstruct village dance forms. On the other hand, the movement’s leaders also often promote the idea of dancers realizing their own expressive potential through such dancing. Lecturer: Dr. Andriy Nahachewsky
