Presented in Baltimore for the first time, "White" is a hilarious and unsettling play by Pulitzer-winning playwright James Ijames ("Fat Ham"). This subversive dark comedy opens RLP's 16th season. Mari-Andrea Travis directs.
Gus is a white painter. Vanessa is a Black actress. Gus wants to be presented in a major exhibition for artists of color, so he hires Vanessa to "perform" as Balkonaé Townsend, a brash and political personality who will fit the museum’s desire for “new voices.” Everything is great, until Balkonaé takes over and Gus has to deal with the mess he’s made. This plays spins out of control as it explores issues of privilege, racial tourism, and gatekeeping in the art world.
Performed live on stage at Strand Theater, 5426 Harford Road, Baltimore, MD 21214. Tickets are general admission, $25 on Thursdays and Sundays; $30 on Fridays and Saturdays. A special discounted "Industry Night" performance is just $15, on Monday, January 11.
Rapid Lemon Productions uses paperless ticketing -- patrons' names will be at will call on the date of the performance. Tickets are non-refundable, but can be exchanged (subject to availability).
"White" is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Dramatists Play Service. www.concordtheatricals.com
