A Badge Of Pride Project in Partnership with The Writer’s Garret. Supported in part by the City of Dallas Office of Arts & Culture"The Love That Dares" explores the ways LGBTQ+ people have written about love—quietly, urgently, defiantly, and with a clarity that often defied the world around them. This performance draws from historic Queer love letters and personal writings that chart longing, connection, heartbreak, and the everyday courage it takes to desire openly.
As with all CORRESPONDENCE performances, the texts will be presented verbatim and brought to life by a diverse ensemble of contemporary readers from Dallas’s Queer community. The focus here is intimacy: the small details of affection; the risks taken to reach another person; the private declarations that became proof of Queer lives in eras when such expressions were rarely protected.
"The Love That Dares" will highlight love in its many forms—romantic, tender, impatient, complicated, sustaining. Some writers were separated by oceans or wars; some navigated family expectations or legal dangers; some wrote from inside long-term partnerships that have rarely been documented. Each fragment offers a window into how LGBTQ+ people have expressed care and devotion across generations.
Presented at the Bishop Arts Theatre Center, the performance continues CORRESPONDENCE’s documentary approach and non-literal casting, inviting audiences to consider how love becomes part of the historical record: how written affection preserves what communities were never meant to lose.
This is an evening rooted in connection and recognition—an encounter with the people who put their hearts on paper, and a reflection on the ways Queer love has endured, adapted, and insisted on its own worth.
More details and full text selections will be announced as the performance development continues.
