Artist Statement:
These objects and buildings stand as evidence of our past, from large scale industries, our evolving social communities, to individual structures and objects from an earlier era, some still in use, others gone abandoned. They become landmarks, tourist attractions, eyesores, local memories, and eventually an expected part of the landscape itself. They often are symbols of a region's historic past and serve as witnesses to the evolution of our own history and our economic and cultural changes. Many people, artists, and writers over time have been drawn to abandoned and weathered places, for their stories, their texture, their endurance as well as their impermanence, and their ever changing character.
These places can be familiar and comforting when passing them on a frequently travelled road. They might be an unforgettable surprise when seeing a new place for the first time. Or they can just catch your eye as you notice an unusual detail while walking through an alley. It's also worth mentioning as it is the only non-building, I included Grounded in this body of work to acknowledge an earlier historic piece of technology, that while not in everyday use, is still maintained, usable, and enjoyed for its connection to our past.
The show will be exhibited in the Main Gallery from September 5 to 26, 2024
