Garden City Coffee House Series Hosts Sing-Along Concert Spanning CenturiesGARDEN CITY: Before the Victorian era, New Year's Eve was a bigger celebration than Christmas –celebrated with gifts and gatherings, music and merriment, cakes and ales (much like it is now) – but people in their homes and pubs helped make the music themselves!
On Fri., Jan. 2, the Our Times Coffee House at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island will present The Royal Yard (Robin Greenstein and Stuart Markus), to lead the audience in rollicking pub tunes and songs for New Years, spanning from the 1700s to the 1960s, all of which were meant for a chorus of amateur voices.
The duo, known on Long Island and beyond for singing 19th-century sea chanteys, also has a large repertoire of drinking songs (and even a few bawdy ones) that were popular at the time as well, said Markus. "A lot of songs went back and forth from sea to shore, where before records and amplifiers, if you went to the pub for music, you were going to be helping to make it," he said, adding, "Come prepared to sing along – it's a great feeling of community and social connection, and a lot of fun, and when everyone is singing, there's no need to feel self-conscious!"
The evening begins with an open mic at 7:30, with the feature performers starting between 8:15-8:30.
Tickets are $20, and include a complimentary glass of (non-alcoholic) champagne.
The Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island is located at 38 Old Country Rd., Garden City, a short ways west of the Mineola train station. For more information, see http://www.OurTimesCoffeehouse.org.
