Much of Colonial Charleston’s architecture, trade and economy, plantation systems, politics, culinary traditions and slavery codes can be tied to Barbados. According to the newly published book “Colony of a Colony” by Peg Eastman and Robert Stockton, “In 1670, English settlers, freemen, and the enslaved from Barbados landed at what we now know as Charles Towne Landing State Park. Collectively they begot Carolina,” modeling it after the tiny Caribbean nation. Among these early settlers was Robert Daniell, Daniel Island’s namesake. Daniell would become a military leader and deputy governor of the Carolina Colonies, while amassing thousands of acres of Lowcountry land. What is Daniell’s story – and how is he connected to the “Barbados Adventurers”? In celebration of what would be Daniell’s 380th birthday in April, join us as we welcome guest speakers Eastman and Stockton to share more about their book – and what they discovered about Daniell, his Barbadian counterparts, and the impact these early settlers had on the Holy City’s pioneering story.
