About this Event

Poisoned Apple? — A Work-in-Progress Showing

Join us for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at "Poisoned Apple?", an interactive contemporary dance work in development. Before its premiere on June 20th at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, this community outreach event invites you to become a vital part of the creative process.

A Digital Fairy Tale Where You Decide

Mirror, mirror, on the screen, who gets the most views and likes of all? "Poisoned Apple?" is a bold reimagining of the classic Snow-White narrative through the high-pressure lens of modern digital life. In this experience, the audience decides the storyline via live voting. Whether the protagonist is the soul on stage or the collective spirit of the room, the journey through the digital woods is one we all share.

Be the First to Test the Prototype

This is more than a regular work-in-progress showing. It is a community collaboration exploring a central question from choreographer Kyoko Fujimoto: Why do we still go to live dance performances when entertainment is always available on our device? During this event, you will:

  • Test the Prototype: Be among the first to trial the live scene-selection process alongside a preview of selected choreography.
  • Shape the Work: Participate in a dedicated feedback session to help refine the interactive format and audience experience.
  • Join the Conversation: Share your insights on how these digital choices resonate with you in a live theater setting.

Event Info:

  • Date: Thursday, May 21 st , 7-8pm (Door opens at 6:30pm).
  • Location: DCCAH Office Multi-Purpose Room, 200 I Street, SE, Washington, DC 20003
  • Don’t forget to bring your smartphone! A charged phone is required to participate in the live voting and interactive elements.

Bio:

Kyoko Fujimoto is a versatile choreographer based in Washington DC whose journey began with classical ballet and musical theater in Japan, Boston, and New York City. She holds a B.A. in Physics from Boston University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Her interdisciplinary background enables her to fuse artistic and technical/scientific ideas. Fujimoto’s choreography often explores unexpected themes like video games and medical imaging. In 2018, CriticalDance noted that her food ballet, Flavorland, "expertly captures the joyful experience of devouring a chocolate truffle." In 2025, Dancing in the District lauded her "daring choreography" and the "juxtaposition of humor and metaphysics" in her works.

Fujimoto is a recipient of the FY25 AHFP Fellowship and the FY26 Project, Events, and Festivals Grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
