"Our Space" Exhibition Opening

We invite residents and community stakeholder groups to the ‘Our Space’ participatory exhibition at Islington Museum for an evening of informal networking and discussion about women’s experiences of safety, urban violence, and insecurity in the Finsbury Park Area.
Our Space showcases University College London's (UCL) ethnographic research project 'Embodying the Social’. Over the last two years UCL researchers and local female residents, supported by Islington Council staff, have examined life around Blackstock Road and Finsbury Park, two areas described as feeling particularly unsafe and intense, especially at night-time. Together, they explored how urban environments can uniquely affect women’s feelings of safety, impact their mental health, and shape how women move in and through the world.
This exhibition showcases the creative engagement of female residents living and working in Islington. The exhibition is based on research led by Sahra Gibbon, Alice McAlpine-Riddell and Rosie Mathers at UCL and co-curated by artistic researcher Lucy Sabin and Sarah Guzman from Islington Museum.
Our Community Stakeholder event will provide space and opportunity for local communities to view and engage with the exhibition materials with brief commentaries, a short Q and A and reception. There will also be the option to view archival materials relevant to the exhibition at Islington Archives.
