T’ai Peng, Robert, Chan, one of Savannah’s first immigrants from China, and his wife Annie lived in the Davenport House from 1901–1902. During their time there, they operated a Chinese laundry in the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy, leaving a significant mark on Savannah’s cultural and economic landscape as part of the city’s early Chinese-American community.
This exhibition features rare photographs and stories that reveal the daily lives of the Chan family, their business endeavors, and their experience as part of a growing Chinese-American community in the South. Through these images, visitors will discover a unique perspective on the intersection of Chinese heritage and Southern identity during this pivotal time in Savannah’s history.
It’ll be a packed night with refreshments from E-Tang Asian Bistro, a performance from the Dragon Dance Team from Savannah Arts Academy , and the Savannah Municipal Archives will be on site doing on the spot oral histories with their History on the Go program.
