A Visual Arts Talk...
When John Hewitt first met Colin Middleton in 1934, he described him as ‘one of the very few people whom I have felt, on first meeting, to be exceptional, even perhaps a genius’. Hewitt and Middleton were to play crucial roles within each other’s professional lives for the next twenty years and maintained a friendship that endured until Middleton’s death in 1983. In this talk Dickon Hall will explore this relationship through certain key events, as well as using their writing and correspondence to draw out the influence they had on each other, and the impact of their association on the art world in Ireland in the middle of the twentieth century.
Dickon Hall is an art dealer, curator and consultant, and has written extensively on twentieth century and contemporary Irish art. He has an MA from the Courtauld Institute of Art and a PhD from Ulster University. He curated the exhibition ‘Colin Middleton and Belfast’ at the Ulster Museum in 2023-24, and has published monographs on Middleton and Nevill Johnson.
