This coming-of-age odyssey traces nine-year-old Eleanor’s path from the U.S. to Germany, where her family moves in pursuit of work during the Great Depression. But when war breaks out as they are crossing the Atlantic, any plans to return home vanish, trapping them as enemy aliens in Berlin.
For seven years, Eleanor’s adolescence unfolds against a backdrop of bombings, Gestapo threats, the fall of Berlin, and the perils of Russian occupation. Yet even in the darkest of times, she clings fiercely to hope, humor, and a rich inner world.
Eighty years later, her granddaughter brings this extraordinary history to life in a dynamic performance accompanied by cinematic sound, projection, and lighting. With nuance and wit, Ingrid seamlessly embodies her ancestors to deliver a timely account of war.
