We will be doing a deep dive into intercultural concepts that will help you be more effective as a therapist. It will help you nuance and strengthen your work in this area by adding a complementary approach to diversity work that is not often taught in mental health graduate programs. At the end of the workshop, you will have clear and solid frameworks that you can use in practice. This is my most comprehensive workshop to date!
These are some of the topics that will be covered:
- How intercultural communication (IC) differs from traditional approaches to diversity used in psychology, and how it is complementary
- The most important intercultural skill
- Developmental model to approach differences more effectively (a precursor for intercultural effectiveness)
- Apply the developmental model to current situations
- At least 16 key cultural dimensions for an effective cultural analysis
- Increase self-awareness about your own cultural perspectives
- Explore culture and emotion, language, and nonverbal communication
- Intercultural empathy
- Developing a dynamic and process-oriented view of culture (not a static one)
- Cultural adjustment
- Situating intercultural work in the context of other traditional models used in psychology, and review Cheryl’s synthesis
- Comments on a current trend in the field
- Intercultural conflict
- Intercultural adaptation for more effective and relational interactions
- Address how culture is embodied
- Review of key Polyvagal Theory concepts and skills
- Apply a nervous system approach to intercultural skills and interactions, and decreasing polarization; addressing cancel culture; increasing complexity
