About this Event

Does writing poetry—or offering prayer—first necessitate total understanding? Scott Cairns doesn’t believe so. A mentor to dozens of poets throughout his years as a creative writing professor and director of the Seattle Pacific MFA program, in addition to an Orthodox Christian and spiritual writer, Cairns sees his work differently: “the results of my writing to see what I didn’t know to see, to say what I didn’t know to say.”

And Cairns has much to wrestle with: in the pages of , he confronts the brutal reality of a cancer diagnosis and treatment, the inevitability of death for himself and those he loves, and the complex tapestry of his Eastern Orthodox faith. Intertwined with Cairns’ philosophical reflections are moments of unexpected simplicity: the silken ear of a Labrador, the Salish Sea, beeswax candles, “a nearly eucharistic caffé e panino.”

In courageously facing the reality that he “might soon / join the ranks of the departed,” Cairns buoys his readers up for their own inevitable journeys.

With a prelude from harpist Riko Matsuoka. Q&A, book signing, and light refreshments to follow.
