Madeleine Peyroux, born in Athens, Georgia, in 1974, discovered her lifelong musical vocation during her teenage years busking on the streets of Paris. Following her parents' divorce, she moved to the French capital with her mother in 1987. A self-taught guitarist, she began playing in the city's Latin Quarter, befriending street musicians and citing the legendary Edith Piaf as an early influence. At 16, she joined the Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band, touring Europe and immersing herself in the music of Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday. This experience led her to New York, where her talent was spotted by Atlantic Records. Her 1996 breakthrough debut album, Dreamland, which sold 200,000 copies, earned her comparisons to jazz greats like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.
After a brief hiatus, Peyroux signed with Rounder Records in 2003, beginning a career-defining collaboration with multi-Grammy-winning producer Larry Klein. This partnership yielded the game-changing album, Careless Love (2004), which featured her signature tune "Don't Wait Too Long" and a milestone rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love." The album's half-million sales catapulted her from the jazz world into the mainstream.
Peyroux and Klein continued their successful work on Half the Perfect World (2006) and her first album of all-original compositions, Bare Bones (2009). The pair later reunited for The Blue Room (2013), a sensuous tribute to Ray Charles’s Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, which earned a Grammy nomination for its engineering. Peyroux self-produced the eclectic Secular Hymns (2016), and reunited with Klein for Anthem (2019), an album featuring politically reflective new songs (co-written with Klein, David Baerwald, and others) alongside the title track by Leonard Cohen.
Thirty years after her busking days, the "genre-defying virtuoso" is an accomplished performer with nine acclaimed albums and a wealth of accolades, including the BBC International Artist Of The Year honor. Her enduring dedication to her craft and "immense talent" continue to shine through.
In 2023, Peyroux continued her world tour supporting the 2021 Careless Love Deluxe Anniversary Edition re-release and debuted her new symphony program performances.
