Garrison Keillor: If you're over about 50, you already know that Garrison is arguably the finest American humorist of the century, still having fun telling stories and bringing laughter and song to audiences. If you're younger, he's a brilliant humorist, author of many books and for about 40 years the creator of the Prairie Home Companion radio variety show and the inventor of Lake Woebegon the imaginary town in central Minnesota that's been lost in a map fold.
This performance is entirely to fund programs in Uganda to develop [independent] economic, nutritional, and social thriving of communities in northwest Uganda's Nebbi District. These are devised by local NGOs and supported by the nonprofit 501c3, Transforming Individual Lives Today, Inc., (TILT). This was founded by a Vermont attorney for the programs that she began; after the accidental death of Alec Johnson in 2014, she passed its management to his family to continue the work he'd begun there.
www.tilt.eco is its web site, where you can read in detail about its economic and educational programs. It has supported scholarships for more than 100 students; it works with local farmers to teach improved farming and economic practices, it has created a program to teach adolescent girls to sew their own menstrual pads, providing materials and sewing machines in dorms -- the "pads project."
Its overall goal is to build community relationships through economic cooperatives -- Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) by which TILT's programs are carried out.
