About this Event
Experience an evening of live music and conversation—free and open to the public—featuring Trinidad-born trumpeter, percussionist, and composer Etienne Charles, followed by an art talk with cultural thought-leader Nuria Richards and Haitian master contemporary artist Edouard Duval-Carrié.
From 6:00–7:30 PM, Charles performs at Lummus Park (14th St. & Ocean Drive) as part of the Ocean Drive Promenade Music Series.
Then, from 8:00–9:00 PM inside B Bar at The Betsy Hotel (1440 Ocean Drive), Nuria Richards hosts a conversation with Edouard Duval-Carrié focused on art as archive, narrative, and living memory.
The program is produced in partnership with The Betsy Writers Room, FIU’s Public Humanities Lab, and Iris Photo Collective, with support from Pérez CreARTE.

About the Artists
Etienne Charles — Trinidad-born Etienne Charles (trumpet, percussion) is a Guggenheim Fellow and Creative Capital Awardee whose music blends deep cultural research with bold composition and groove-forward performance. His work connects diaspora histories and contemporary storytelling, and he has appeared at major stages including Newport Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, and the Library of Congress. Charles is Associate Professor of Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.
Nuria Richards — Nuria Richards is a thought leader, cultural producer, and creative economy advocate—and a serious market maker completing a Master’s in Art Business at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art. An experienced social entrepreneur, she views art collections as an archive that shapes how we understand the world through time—sometimes through narratives that feel immediate, and sometimes as a lens for looking back.
Edouard Duval-Carrié — Edouard Duval-Carrié is a contemporary visual artist based in Miami. Born and raised in Haiti, he fled the regime of “Papa Doc” Duvalier as a teenager and subsequently lived in Puerto Rico, New York, Montreal, Paris, and Miami. In his Little Haiti studio, Duval-Carrié creates politically charged, luminous sculptures and mixed-media paintings evoking magical realism. He was highlighted for his participation in the 61st Venice Biennale, where his work explores immigration, memory, Vodou symbolism, and the deep cultural ties between Haiti and Africa.
