“What happens when the legal authorities themselves overstep the law?” wonders Marshal Thornton, social studies teacher at Homehard’s high school. “Who holds them accountable? Where does the ultimate authority, the ultimate power, originate?” The question reverberates when four immigrant families, settled in the coastal Maine town by the state government, suffer escalating harassment by two local cops, clandestine members of the KKK. Set against the backdrop of the school year, the last before venerable Homehard High School’s scheduled destruction, the Palestinian and Somali families struggle to deal with the prejudices that reflect the town’s, and the nation’s, history.
