Journey through an evening of sweeping American soundscapes with Leonard Bernstein’s vibrant “Symphonic Dances” from West Side Story, followed by George Gershwin’s dazzling Concerto in F, performed by acclaimed pianist Haochen Zhang. The program concludes with the lush, soaring beauty of Howard Hanson’s “Romantic” Symphony No. 2.

Since his gold medal win at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009, Haochen Zhang has captivated audiences in the United States, Europe, and Asia with a unique combination of deep musical sensitivity, fearless imagination, and spectacular virtuosity. In 2017, Haochen received the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes talented musicians with the potential for a major career in music.
What you need to know:
• No one under 5 admitted (including babies in arms)
• Runtime: approximately 2 hours 30 minutes (including intermission)
• An American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter will be present during this performance. To be seated in the ASL section, please contact FIM Ticket Center at 810.237.7333, email at [email protected] or speak to an usher when you arrive at the venue.
• This concert will be livestreamed at concert time and available on demand for 30 days following the concert. Tickets available soon.
• Sensory warning: Live, full orchestra with percussion and loud volume.
• *Students age 13 and older are invited to come backstage during the intermission of all FSO classical concerts. You will meet the FSO musicians, and check out the behind-the-scenes activity, all while enjoying Enzo’s pizza. Look for the welcome table before the concert to get your backstage pass.
