Amid the devastation of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, the photographers of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) set out to document the struggles of Americans across the country. At the time, their photographs were used to encourage public support for New Deal rural rehabilitation programs. Subsequently, the FSA produced one of the most extensive visual records of American life. Using examples from the exhibition Witness to Change: The Shogren-Meyer Collection, Director and Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Sarah Kohn will explore the power these images had, and continue to have, on American history.
