Beirut, the 1950s. A young woman Alice (Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher), who has left Switzerland for work in Lebanon, meets the young astrophysics university student Joseph whose ambition is to build a rocket to send one of his fellow countrymen to space. A love-match, a wedding, the birth of a daughter, the time happily passing… until 13 April 1975, when civil war breaks out – a conflict that progressively turns the entire existence of Alice and Joseph upside down. As the violence escalates, making everyday life more and more frightening, a crucial question arises: to leave, or to stay? "This is an astonishing bit of craft, a tour de force of filmmaking technique." - Eye for Film."Punctuated by poetic and handcrafted animated moments in stop-motion, Skies of Lebanon builds a fictional universe... a perfect backdrop for the talent of Alba Rohrwacher and the heart of this fascinating story to flourish." - Cineuropa."...this gem of a directorial debut from Chloé Mazlo... a highly promising and winningly idiosyncratic first effort from a talented filmmaker." - The Wee Review."Mazlo’s mixing of animated and live-action creates a dream world that is shaken by the real world and the result is both striking and immensely watchable." - Film Enquiry."Opens the mind to consideration of the impact war and social strife have on families who just want to live in peace. Thanks to its genre-defying style, it's fun while touching on serious themes that are relevant worldwide. The film is a must see." - AWFJ.org"Signals the arrival of a creative new voice in Chloé Mazlo. Moreover, it works as a powerful mediation on the optimism lost for a peacefully cosmopolitan Lebanon." - Film Threat."Both an interesting character drama and a nuanced look at the cost of war." - Flick Feast."This is a clever and also moving film." - FilmWeek.NB - Doors at 7:40pm for an 8:00pm start. The bar will be open before the screening. Presented in partnership with the Off the Wall Films. The CinéClub is open to all students learning French with Alliance Française de Bath but also to anyone with an interest in the French language.Voluntary donations - Alliance Française is a not-for-profit enterprise.
