In 2023, the US surgeon general published a report concerning the impact of loneliness and isolation. The report also included 6 pillars to advance social connection.
This presentation will focus on why human connection is so important and what we can do to promote those connections in a world where humans seem increasingly intent on avoiding face-to-face interactions.
Mel Tidwell is the service leader.

ALISON HITE grew up in Baltimore, MD. She was a cool nerd in high school - honor society president, mock trial team member, but also lacrosse player and varsity soccer captain.
She started college at University of Maryland - Baltimore County (UMBC) as an engineering major but quickly switched to psychology when she found herself re-reading her psychology textbook rather than studying for her upcoming statics exam. She attended the University of Alabama to earn her PhD in cognitive psychology.
Alison taught at Auburn University Montgomery in Alabama, Gannon University in Erie, PA, and Chadron State College in Chadron, NE before moving sight unseen to North Georgia in 2015 to be one of the first two professors on the Blue Ridge campus of the University of North Georgia.
Dr. Hite has enjoyed watching the campus grow over the past 10+ years. She started coming to MLUUC in 2016 and finally became a member at some point (though she can’t remember exactly when). She enjoys trying to play the guitar, writing song parodies, and hiking.
