Join us Monday evening, April 13 when the Aiken Artist Guild monthly meeting will feature a presentation by renowned stone sculptor Jeff Birchill!
"In my late teens and early 20’s I had several of my oil paintings, I did as a “Sunday Painter” hung in exhibitions in the Seattle area. After being in the Grocery Business for over 12 years I decided to go back to college. One of the classes I took was “Beginning Stone Carving”, where I learned the basics. Before finishing this class, I started working as a commercial artist at an “In House” art department. Eventually, I set up my own “Graphic Design Company” where I won several international design awards and continued in commercial art until I retired in 2000. In 1981 while living in an Indian Village in Canada I met “Opie” an Indian artist who was like the brother I never had. He gave me a piece of his soapstone, and that kindled a love for stone carving. In 1984 I moved to Canada, first to work with the Indian Tribal Leaders, and then I set up my graphic design company again. This when I became a “Sunday Stone Carver” until 2013, when I received a “Signature Artist” status with “The Society of Animal Artist” the most recognized prestigious animal art group internationally in 23 countries with only about 500 artist receiving this level of artist excellence. Shortly, I was elected into the National Sculpture Society. My stone sculptures have been exhibited in over 20 national art museums, from New York to California, and Minnesota to Florida. My sculptures are in the permanent collection of “Brookgreen Gardens”, SC, the goal of figurative sculptors, and also the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, NJ. After resigning from SAA I have only shown my sculptures at The Aiken Center for the Arts, and now I sculpt stone for the enjoyment again."
All Aiken Artist Guild meetings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments served. The meeting will be from 6:30-8pm at the Aiken Center for the Arts, 122 Laurens Street.
