AI/ML applications in Bioinformatics
Summer School on Foundation Models, Explainable AI, Agentic Systems and Protein Design
AI/ML Applications in Bioinformatics is an intensive summer school, which will be held between the 22- 25 September 2026, designed to explore the latest advances at the intersection of artificial intelligence and computational biology. Organised by the BioGeMT team at the University of Malta, the programme brings together leading researchers, practitioners, and students to provide a hands-on introduction to modern AI methodologies shaping the future of bioinformatics.
The curriculum begins by establishing a robust foundation in AI principles, including representation engineering and model validation, before moving into advanced topics such as foundation models, explainable AI, and protein design. A key highlight of the schedule is a comprehensive, full-day deep dive into agentic systems, providing participants with unique practical exposure to this emerging field.
Over four days, participants will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience through lectures, interactive workshops, and collaborative sessions led by experts from academia and industry. The programme concludes with a closing symposium dedicated to the usage of AI in Bioinformatics within the local landscape, providing a broader context for the week's technical sessions. This summer school aims to equip participants with practical skills, critical understanding, and exposure to the rapidly evolving AI-driven bioinformatics landscape.
