About this Event

This session is the second in our three-part Anniversary in the Archives book club series, bringing together key texts from across Modern Art Oxford’s history to reflect on past exhibitions, ideas and the artists who shaped them. Across the series, we explore themes of internationalism, education and the foregrounding of visionary female voices.

What To Expect

This session centres on The Artist as Lifelong Learner: Ruth Asawa and Education by Emily Pringle, explored in the context of Citizen of the Universe, the first public exhibition of Ruth Asawa’s work outside the United States, presented at Modern Art Oxford in 2022.

In her essay, Emily Pringle reflects on Asawa’s lifelong commitment to learning, tracing the close relationship between her art practice, family life and work in schools and communities. Together, we’ll discuss Asawa’s belief in creativity as something rooted in curiosity, collaboration and continual growth, and consider how her approach continues to shape ideas around art and education today.

Tickets are offered on a pay-what-you-can basis (£9, £12 or £15), with higher-price options helping to support Modern Art Oxford as a charity and keep events like this accessible to more people. Your ticket will include a digital copy of the text in advance and a complimentary drink to enjoy during the session.
