About this Event
Afro-Kernow is an evening of film, conversation, art, and celebration bringing together students, staff, and the wider community to reflect on Black presence, creativity, and belonging in Cornwall.
The event will open with a screening of Small Gods, a powerful documentary exploring the lives of Batwa communities displaced from their ancestral forests in Uganda. The film invites audiences to reflect on questions of land, marginalisation, conservation, and historical justice.
Following the screening, a panel discussion will bring together speakers to explore the experiences of African and Black diaspora students living and studying in Cornwall. The conversation will centre on community, identity, visibility, and what it means to build belonging in rural and coastal spaces.
The evening will also feature:
- A small exhibition of artwork
- Poetry readings from students and community members
- Food celebrating African and diaspora cuisines
- Music to close the evening in a spirit of gathering and celebration
Afro-Kernow aims to create space for dialogue, creativity, and connection — highlighting the richness of Black life, scholarship, and artistic expression in Cornwall.
