UK homes are responsible for 18% of the nation's carbon emissions and 80% of the homes that will be occupied in 2050 have already been built. The social housing sector, therefore, faces a huge challenge to retrofit homes to the required standards of energy efficiency. The effort has begun in earnest with aspirations set, funding allocated and processes devised. This CPD session is designed for professionals who want a practical understanding of where retrofit is currently succeeding and where further improvements and innovations are still needed.

Drawing on live project experience, the session will explore how PAS 2035 sets the standard for risk managing the installation of energy efficiency measures in existing buildings, but how translating its requirements into real-world delivery is far from straightforward: the increasingly complex documentation and sign-off processes; the ambiguity around what constitutes a compliant retrofit design; and the shifting landscape of regulatory expectations.

Importantly, the session addresses the technical and social realities of retrofit work: the challenge of achieving robust junction detailing in older housing stock, and the added complexity of working within occupied homes—particularly in social housing contexts where resident needs, access, and communication are critical factors.

This isn’t a theoretical overview, but a grounded look at the constraints, risks, and practical challenges that shape PAS 2035 delivery on real projects.
