Advanced Musical Improv Intensive with Shulie Cowen

About this Workshop:

This advanced workshop is an opportunity for experienced musical improvisers to get individual attention and feedback, with a particular focus on solos, character work, and dynamic scenes that lead to strong, cohesive songs. We’ll work on the particular issues students are facing in their musical improv, with a focus on giving you tools that you can put to use on stage immediately.

This workshop is part class, part personalized coaching session with Shulie Cowen, the director and co-founder of Opening Night: The Improvised Musical!®, which has been running for over 25 years in Los Angeles.

Date, Time & Location: This six-hour intensive workshop will take place on Saturday, June 20th from 10:00am to 1:00pm and 2:00pm - 5:00pm at the All Out Comedy Theater located at 2550 Telegraph Ave in Oakland, CA.

Intermediate/Advanced Students Welcome: This workshop is open to those who have studied or performed musical improv at the intermediate or advanced level. If you have never studied musical improv or have only taken one or two classes, please know that your registration will be cancelled.

Maximum Capacity: In order to ensure the best possible experience for those taking part, we are capping this workshop at a maximum of 14 total students.

About the Instructor:

SHULIE COWEN teaches improv to kids, senior citizens, and everyone in between. After teaching for over 15 years at The Second City Hollywood and iO West, Shulie now travels the USA and the world teaching acting and improv at festivals and schools, including Camp Improv Utopia Yosemite, The Florida State Thespian Festival, and the Shanghai American School. She is a graduate of Northwestern University, a former member of The Second City National Touring Company, and an original cast member of Schoolhouse Rock Live!. Shulie studied improv in Chicago at The Second City Training Center, The Annoyance Theatre, and at iO Chicago with Del Close. She currently directs and performs in Opening Night: The Improvised Musical!® (the longest running improvised musical in Los Angeles--and possibly the world!) and with the improv team EST. Film and television credits include Mr. Mayor, Parks and Recreation, 2 Broke Girls, Liza on Demand, and How I Met Your Mother.
