Adulting 101: What Happens If Something Happens to Me?

It's a question most of us have thought about… but probably haven't done much about.

What happens if something happens to me? Where is the Will? Who needs to be contacted? What happens to the house? What happens to the investments? What does probate actually mean? Who is responsible for everything? And perhaps most importantly… where do you even start?

We're a financial advisor, two estate lawyers and a real estate advisor who see these questions every day, usually from families trying to sort things out after the fact. One of us, Kathy, went through it personally after handling her dad's estate, and that experience was what pushed her and her husband to get their own affairs in order. It's also what sparked this evening.

Adulting 101 is a casual, practical conversation about the important things we should all know, but don't always know how to organize or where to start. Not just for what happens after we die, but for what happens if we become unable to make decisions for ourselves.
