TEACHER PROFILE: Hilary Jones
I have worked as a production potter and am familiar with all aspects of making pots on the wheel. I have in addition worked in a production pottery in Devon UK where I was exposed to all aspects of ceramic production, giving me a solid grounding. Returning from UK I was subsequently accepted into the Associate program at the Jam Factory Arts Centre in Adelaide where I worked with the Ceramic Department for two years. During this time my fellow associates and I were responsible for creating teaching programmes for both teenagers and adult classes and the teaching of them.
Upon my return from Adelaide I attained an Advanced Diploma in Art and Design (Ceramics) and have continued to make pots. I regularly exhibit at Kerrie Lowe Gallery and am represented by the Gallery. My work can be viewed on my website hjceramics.com as well as any further background additional information.
I have worked in sales for many years and it is this exposure to people of all walks of life that allows me to be confident both in my skills as a ceramic artist and the ability to convey information in a succinct manner.
COURSE OUTLINE
This is an intensive 8 week course which will suit people who have previously worked with clay either hand building or wheel work. Students are encouraged to express their own ideas and are given guidance to bring their concept towards finished pieces.
SKILLS OUTCOMES
On completing this course, students will have developed skills in:
• wedging clay;
• centring clay on the wheel;
• throwing simple and more challenging forms - Including making handles and lids
• trimming and turning thrown pieces;
• surface treatment including glazing;
• basic kiln & firing knowledge
Clay Allocation
6 kg of stoneware clay is included in the class cost, as well as all firing and glazing required for this amount.
When members have used their clay allocation for the term, if further clay is required, members will need to supply any further clay(in line with workshop requirements) and firing must be put through the members shelves with regular firing fees and limits applying.
Non-members are able to purchase an extra 2 .5 kg for $35 which includes glazing and firing based on members rates.
