This lecture explores how Indigenous language revitalization and fashion can serve as powerful tools for cultural expression, storytelling, entrepreneurship, and community connection. Drawing on experiences with Indigenous language initiatives and the NW Native Fashion Show and Interwoven, these speakers will highlight how collaboration and creative economies can preserve cultural knowledge and strengthen communities.
For ages 16 and older. Those under age 16 may attend accompanied by an adult.
About the Speakers:
Robert Elliott - Eugene, OR
Robert Elliott is the director of the Northwest Indigenous Language Institute (NILI) and the Yamada Language Center (YLC) at the University of Oregon. He has been a language instructor since 1995, and his interest areas include teacher training/development, computer assisted language learning, and online language learrning.
Jacob Wallis - Pendleton, OR
Jacob Wallis is the Business Service Manager for Nixyáawii Community Financial Services (NCFS) a Native non-profit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Jacob brings over seven years’ experience in banking and has a degree in Business Management with a focus in User Experience Design from Oregon State University. He also has a background as a small business creative in graphic design work. Currently in his role as the Business Service Manager, he is dedicated to assisting Native Entrepreneurs and Native small businesses on their journey to success through various business-centric tools and resources such as: technical assistance, education, consultation, business ideation, classes, and workshops. Including co-directing the Northwest Native Economic Summit and the Northwest Native Fashion Show and Interwoven Fashion Shows. He follows in his parents’ footsteps who both played key roles in the economic development of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.
